KLM 747-400 Maiden Flight |   3. Pushback and Startup |
Since we are going to move, the BEACON lights need to be turned on first. Set BEACON to ON on the 'overhead panel' (Ctrl+Shift+O) at the bottom right.
Now we are going to ask the ground crew to push us 360ft back and then the nose 90 degrees to the right. We do this on the Communication panel (Ctrl+Shift+C). Now we are going to ask the ground for the push: - Press REQUEST with the right mouse click in the middle below. - Then set the distance to 36 on the left (right mouse click on the edge of the rotary knob). - Then set the nose direction to R90 on the right (right mouse click on the edge of the rotary knob). - Now press REQUEST with the left mouse click. Make sure the sound is on and listen to the communication.
Ground asks us to release the parking break. We do that with the period '.' |
When the pushback is done, ground asks us to turn the parking break back on with Ctrl+'.'
Now we can set all four Hydrolic Demand Pumps to AUTO on the bottom left of the 'Overhead panel' (Ctrl+Shift+O), which will allow us to operate the rudders and flaps. |
Because the 747 has four large heavy engines, we are not allowed to start them until after pushback. First, we turn off two of the Packs on the right of the 'overhead panel' (Ctrl+Shift+O) to have enough power for the starters. We also turn the four Engine Bleed switches to ON here to allow the Packs to be supplied with air by the engines.
On the 'Throttle panel' (Ctrl+Shift+T) we set the fuel supply to ON for all four engines. |
Now we switch to the 'Overhead panel' (Ctrl+Shift+O). We also turn on the EICAS (Ctrl+Shift+E) on Engine (ENG) to see if the engines start. - Pull out the starters of engines 2 and 3 in the middle of the 'Overhead panel'. - Check on the EICAS if N2 increases and wait for the starters to engage again. - Pull out the starters of engines 1 and 4 in the middle of the 'Overhead panel'. - Check on the EICAS if N2 increases and wait for the starters to engage again. |
When all engines are running smoothly, the APU can be turned off. The electricity now comes from the engines. |
Save as Flight |
This is a good moment to save the current setup/situation as Default Flight. Then you don't need to do all of this setup again next time. In the menu go to 'File'>'Save Flight...' and call it for example 'KLM 747-400 at EHAM gate F4 Started' ATTENTION: Check if all switches are in the correct positions. Sometimes these are not saved correctly! Especially MCP and lighting switches go wrong sometimes. |
